Cost for installing an EV charging station in India would vary from INR 5 lakhs to 40 Lakhs depending on the type and number of  chargers one wants to install. It also includes the added infrastructure requirements.

Installation time could be between 4 – 12 weeks depending on grid access, civil works, and permitting systems in your area.

Even though a DCFC requires about 15 Sqft of space, MoP guidelines states that a public charging station must have minimum dimensions of 15m X 7m, which equates to 105 Sqm or 1130 Sqft.

No specific licenses are required for the setup of public EV charging stations. Any individual or organization if so desires can set up an electric vehicle charging stations provided that, the stations meets the technical as well as performance standards and protocols laid down by the Ministry of Power and the Central Electricity Authority from time to time.

You need to apply for electricity connection with the local Distribution Company. Post submission of completed application, the connection for a Public Charging Station shall be provided within time period not exceeding seven days in metro cities, fifteen days in other municipal areas and thirty days in rural areas, within which either a new connection is provided or existing connection modified. However if the area requires extension of distribution mains, or commissioning of new sub-stations, the time period is then specified by the Appropriate Commission.

You can also obtain electricity from any generation company through open access. Open Access shall be provided for this purpose within 15 days of receipt of the application complete in all respect. You shall be required to pay the applicable surcharge – equal to the current level of cross subsidy (not more than 20 percent, as per the Tariff Policy Guidelines), transmission charges and wheeling charges. No other surcharge or charges shall be levied except those mentioned.

The site requires appropriate civil works, cabling & electrical works ensuring safety, proper earthing, adequate space for Charging and entry/exit of vehicles and Fire protection equipment and facilities before installation of chargers.

The PCS operator should also Tie up with at least one online Network Service Providers (NSPs) to enable advance remote/online booking of charging slots by EV owners.
